About The Department of Music Education
In the seventies and early eighties of the twentieth century, the study of music did not go beyond being a branch of practical studies in the male and female pedagogical institutes. The duration of the study was only two academic years after high school. The graduate from the institute obtained a diploma in music education to work in the schools of the State of Kuwait.
To develop the competencies of the graduates, the institute was converted into the College of Basic Education in the academic year 1986- 1987. The study duration became four academic years, after which the graduate obtained a Bachelor of Education in one of the available Majors, including the Major in Music Education. This resulted in the development of the Music Department's curricula according to the duration and the required graduates' competencies. Since then, the curricula of the music department have been developed several times to keep in line with global developments in teaching of Music Education which go hand in hand with the technological development in the world of music including electronic instruments and computer programs.
The Music Education Department goals:
The department aims to qualify its graduates theoretically and practically in the field of studying the basics of Western and Arabic Music, collective and individual Singing, playing piano and an additional music instrument. The student studies the piano as a basic keyboard instrument to use in performing school chants, marches, and folk games. As for playing another instrument that the student chooses from the available instruments, or studying of individual singing, the aim is to enrich the student's performance as a teacher of music education, open the way for artistic and professional diversity that enables him to participate in creating various music school teams.
Professional description of the Music Education Graduate:
The student reads and performs the music notation on the piano at the level of the school anthems prescribed in the schools of the Ministry of Education, plays another instrument, or sings, conducts research on the history of music and notates music on a specialized computer program, performs some Kuwaiti folk rhythms and uses school percussion instruments. Some talented graduates benefited from some specialized courses and came to the field of composing and writing songs and school operettas.
Job Opportunities for the graduates:
I addition to working in schools, some graduates work in organizing musical activities sponsored by the "National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters". The music department hopes to be able to qualify its graduates to work in other fields such as the Kuwaiti army band and the cultural centers whose edifices have begun to spread in the State of Kuwait.
Admission Requirements:
The applicant should have a high school diploma with acceptable GPA, according to the percentages determined by the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training in accordance with the College of Basic Education Board. In addition to that, the applicant undergoes a personal interview and a music ability evaluation test.
