This course provides an introduction to special needs of school children with various types of disabilities that may qualify them for special education programs. The course discusses the learning and health care needs of school children with specific learning disabilities within the scope of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Children are identified under one or more of these categories. Early identification of a child with special needs is important because early intervention is essential in educating children with disabilities. It also appraises nurses' role in health promotion at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The practicum part of this course is incorporated along with the course NUR 429, School health nursing practice.
