Program Characteristics

The major goals of the English curriculum at the College of Nursing are to promote effective communication and critical thinking among students in using the English language.  The English Language Program provides a series of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses including (1) general English courses, and (2) English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses.  The general English courses consist of remedial and general English courses for building a foundation for developing learners' communicative abilities in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The specialized courses are English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses for building the knowledge and skills of professional English in the field of Nursing.

The English Language Program has four main characteristics:

1) A theme-based approach to curriculum design in which the English language components are organized around the academic content themes taught in specialized courses at the College of Nursing.
2) Academic content that has been integrated into English language courses in order to enhance students' motivation to learn both the English language and the medical/ nursing content.
3) Emphasis on increasing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing which involve taking lecture notes, presentation skills, skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific information in medical English texts, and essay writing skills.
4)Development of students' higher order cognitive skills (i.e., analyzing,  evaluating,  and creating), and application of these cognitive skills to effectively use the English language in giving instructions, documenting a patient's case history, and reporting/writing nursing research topics.
Academic Activities for Teacher Professional Development
The faculty members at the English Language Unit have actively participated in many academic activities for teacher professional development.  The academic activities are routinely organized by the Language Center to encourage the faculty members to enhance their professional knowledge and skills in English curriculum design, language teaching methods, course materials development, language testing and assessment.  The main activities can be summarized as follows.

Electronic English Placement Test (E-EPT)

The first trial of the Electronic Cambridge English Placement Test (E-CEPT) was conducted on September 2, 2015 at the College of Nursing. There were technical challenges faced by the faculty members on the first trial.  With continuous effort to integrate modern technology into language testing, the English Language Unit at the College of Nursing has successfully launched an E-EPT on January 29, 2018.  The English Language Unit has received positive feedback from teachers and students who have participated in the E-EPT.
